Nuclear power is the use of sustained nuclear fission to generate heat and electricity. Nuclear power plants provide about 5.7% of the world's energy and 13% of the world's electricity. In 2007, the IAEA reported there were 439 nuclear power reactors in operation in the world, operating in 31 countries. Also, more than 150 naval vessels using nuclear propulsion have been built.

There is an ongoing debate about the use of nuclear energy.[Proponents, such as the World Nuclear Association, the IAEA and Environmentalists for Nuclear Energy contend that nuclear power is a sustainable energy source that reduces carbon emissions. Opponents, such as Greenpeace International and NIRS, believe that nuclear power poses many threats to people and the environment.

Nuclear power plant accidents include the Chernobyl disaster (1986), Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster (2011), and the Three Mile Island accident (1979). There have also been some nuclear-powered submarine mishaps. Research into safety improvements is continuing and nuclear fusion, believed to be safer, may be used in the future.

China has 25 nuclear power reactors under construction, with plans to build many more, while in the US the licenses of almost half its reactors have been extended to 60 years, and plans to build another dozen are under serious consideration. However, Japan's 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster prompted a rethink of nuclear energy policy in many countries.[18] Germany decided to close all its reactors by 2022, and Italy has banned nuclear power.Following Fukushima, the International Energy Agency halved its estimate of additional nuclear generating capacity to be built by 2035.

This amazing book is the one they said could not nor should not be written. It lifts the lid off the nuclear power industy like no other.

Is it a blueprint for terror? Or is it a warning to Government about National security?

Profiles in Power: The Antinuclear Movement and the Dawn of the Solar Age
SKU: pip/460/000
Binding: Hardcover: 249 pages

The antinuclear movement and the dawn of the solar age.

There is an inscription inside the book to Senator Bob Graham, dated 1997.

As the 21st century approaches, global warming and the shortage of petroleum will become inescapable reality is the end of the industrial world's oil binge, will lead to a scramble for 20 nonpolluting energy sources and the nuclear power industry will attempt repackage itself as a clean, efficient and viable energy provider. The energy and its dangers linked nuclear weapons and nuclear terrorism, which have become a critical concern of the post-Cold War era of rogue nations necessitate an ever present antinuclear vigilance.

The story of Nuclear Power - a Ladybird book Series 601
SKU: 081208/94/415
Binding: Hardcover: 52 pages
This is a very interesting book if you want to know what people were wriring about nuclear power in 1972. For example - "Maybe hovercraft, if ever used for ocean crossings, could also be propelled by nuclear engines. Nuclear-powered air tugs shuttling their pay loads across the upper atmosphere are yet another poosibility......

This is a wonderful little book.

Nuclear reactor theory ebook
SKU: nrt/ebook/000

The Nuclear Physics and Reactor Theory Handbook was developed to assist nuclear facility operating contractors in providing operators, maintenance personnel, and the technical staff with the necessary fundamentals training to ensure a basic understanding of nuclear physics and reactor theory. The handbook includes information on atomic and nuclear physics; neutron characteristics; reactor theory and nuclear parameters; and the theory of reactor operation. This information will provide personnel with a foundation for understanding the scientific principles that are associated with various DOE nuclear facility operations and maintenance.

Micro Nuclear Reactors - ebook
SKU: mnr/ebook/000
Nuclear power entered this century as a dying industry. A combination of popular
opposition, high profile accidents (Three Mile Island, Chernobyl), concerns about nuclear
weapons proliferation, and a general anti-corporate feeling in the culture, all seemed to
spell the end of fission as an industry. However, recent events have changed matters.
High oil prices and global warming have made reactors much more attractive to the
general public and investors. Moreover, reactor technology has advanced to the point
where small, modular, and very safe reactors are now available. In particular, a new
generation of High Temperature gas Reactors (HTR) using Pebble Bed designs are
particularly promising. As such, companies which can directly or indirectly participate in
the “micro-reactor” nuclear power industry stand to reap considerable profits.

About the author

David MacKay is a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge. He studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge and then obtained his PhD in Computation and Neural Systems at the California Institute of Technology. He returned to Cambridge as a Royal Society research fellow at Darwin College. He is internationally known for his research in machine learning, information theory, and communication systems, including the invention of Dasher, a software interface that enables efficient communication in any language with any muscle. He has taught Physics in Cambridge since 1995. Since 2005, he has devoted much of his time to public teaching about energy. He is a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Climate Change. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society on 14 May 2009.
