Biofuels and Biomass

Biomass is a word that is used quite commonly as a synonym to a few different things today. Basically it is stored solar energy via photosynthesis. Biomass is something that grows and stores solar energy, from which we can then extract that energy by a set of different processes. So Biomass is the raw material unless it is used for food or fiber. Regarded as a fuel biomass is itself a solid fuel that can be converted into other types of fuel, it is stored solar energy that might be used for societies of today.

Wood fuel is the most widespread renewable energy source for heating in the UK. When wood is burned it produces the same amount of carbon dioxide that it absorbed whilst growing - which would have been released anyway if the tree died and rotted. In the UK nearly all wood fuel comes either from commercially managed forestry (where each tree used is replaced) or as a by-product from another activity. As long as wood fuel comes from these sustainable sources (where replanting matches harvesting) it will not cause a net increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, so will not contribute to the problems of climate change.

Biofuel is defined as solid, liquid or gaseous fuel derived from relatively recently dead biological material and is distinguished from fossil fuels, which are derived from long dead biological material. Theoretically, biofuels can be produced from any (biological) carbon source; although, the most common sources are photosynthetic plants. Various plants and plant-derived materials are used for biofuel manufacturing. Globally, biofuels are most commonly used to power vehicles, heating homes, and cooking stoves. Biofuel industries are expanding in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Recent technology developed at Los Alamos National Lab even allows for the conversion of pollution into renewable bio fuel. Agrofuels are biofuels which are produced from specific crops, rather than from waste processes such as landfill off-gassing or recycled vegetable oil.

Building a home distillation apparatus - ebook for making ethanol
SKU: bhda/ebook/000

This ebook contains a step-by-step guide to building a relatively sophisticated distillation apparatus from commonly available materials, using simple tools, and at a cost of under $100 USD. The information contained on this site is directed at anyone who may want to know more about the subject: students, hobbyists, tinkers, pure water enthusiasts, survivors, the curious, and perhaps even amateur wine and beer makers. Designing and building this apparatus is the only subject of this manual. You will find that it confines itself solely to those areas. It does not enter into the domains of fermentation, recipes for making mash, beer, wine or any other spirits. These areas are covered in detail in other readily available books and numerous web sites. The site contains two separate design plans for the stills. And while both can be used for a number of distillation tasks, it should be recognized that their designs have been optimized for the task of separating ethyl alcohol from a water-based mixture. Having said that, remember that the real purpose of this site is to educate and inform those of you who are interested in this subject. It is not to be construed in any fashion as an encouragement to break the law. If you believe the law is incorrect, please take the time to contact your representatives in government, cast your vote at the polls, write newsletters to the media, and in general, try to make the changes in a legal and democratic manner. As a final word, if you decide to build a still like this, you will be on your own. It is distributed WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

TMC-1™ Operations Manual - ebook

TMC-1™ Operations Manual: Conventional hand pounding of agro residues and commercially pressed waste materials consumes well more than half of the total of overall labor and time invested in the local briquette production process. The TMC frees up that labor to effectively increase production output by up to 50% while greatly reducing the drudgery of the overall effort. It is the ideal piece of equipment for the serious production team working in a competitive subsistence environment. This hand-operated device has been developed and tested over the past four years in East Africa. It reduces a wide variety of leaves grasses straws waste paper husks stalks etc., to cornflake sized bits with simple oscillating rotational motion. Using one or two operators, a properly made TMC will process up to 300 Kgs of material—sufficient for up to three production teams—a day. The machine is designed for either portable or stationary use. In either form, and depending upon the materials used in fabrication, it will weigh approximately 65 to 75 Kgs. When collapsed for transport or shipping, the TMC-1™ occupies the dimensions of a rectangular box of 38cm depth, X 61cm height X 65 cm length.

wood stoves factsheet - ebook
SKU: lili/ws/000

CO2 is the most important greenhouse gas; wood is a carbon-neutral fuel in that burning releases CO2 (the same amount as if the trees died and rotted) but new trees absorb it. Growing trees absorb more CO2 than mature trees, so as we harvest mature trees, from a climate change perspective, it is essential that we replace them with new ones. Wood is a renewable resource that provides a habitat for wildlife. It also has a good energy balance, i.e. can be locally produced, requiring very little processing or transport energy (logs more so than pellets, although pellets release less of the pollutants that cause acid rain).

Biofuels, Solar and Wind as Renewable Energy
SKU: bswr/ebook/000

With shortages of fossil energy, especially oil and natural gas, and heavy biomass energy use occurring in both developed and developing countries, a major focus has developed worldwide on renewable energy systems. Renewable energy systems include wind power, biomass, photovoltaics, hydropower, solar thermal, thermal ponds, and biogas. Currently, a heavy focus is on biofuels made from crops, such as corn, sugarcane, and soybeans, for use as renewable energy sources. Wood and crop residues also are being used as fuel. Though it may seem beneficial to use renewable plant materials for biofuel, the use of crop residues and other biomass for biofuels raises many concerns about major environmental problems, including food shortages and serious destruction of vital soil resources. All renewable energy systems need to be investigated because humankind has only about 40 years of oil and gas reserves remaining. There is a 50 to 100 year supply of coal resources in the ground, but coal will become increasingly difficult to extract and will greatly increase the global warming threat. Serious energy conservation and research on viable renewable energy technologies are needed. This book considers the effectiveness and economics of several renewable energy technologies of current interest, including biofuels, solar and wind

Progress in Biomass and Bioenergy Production
SKU: pbbp/000/ebook/000
Alternative energy sources have become a hot topic in recent years. The supply of fossil fuel, which provides about 95 percent of total energy demand today, will eventually run out in a few decades. By contrast, biomass and biofuel have the potential to become one of the major global primary energy source along with other alternate energy sources in the years to come. A wide variety of biomass conversion options with different performance characteristics exists. The goal of this book is to provide the readers with current state of art about biomass and bioenergy production and some other environmental technologies such as Wastewater treatment, Biosorption and Bio-economics. Organized around providing recent methodology, current state of modelling and techniques of parameter estimation in gasification process are presented at length. As such, this volume can be used by undergraduate and graduate students as a reference book and by the researchers and environmental engineers for reviewing the current state of knowledge on biomass and bioenergy production, biosorption and wastewater treatment.

This means where you’d need branches and logs to build a camp fire, you can cook a meal with twigs and leaves that will burn just as hot and just as long at logs and sticks. How can you get more energy from a smaller fuel? By burning that fuel more efficiently. The rocket stove is designed so that the chimney contains and focuses all of the heat directly onto the cooking surface, rather than loosing most of it into the surrounding air.
